A friend ‘tagged’ me on FB to call my attention to a piece in the LA Times. I took the opportunity to recognize the recent death of Uri Avnery:

Charles Familant No argument with Rabbi Brous. I’ve read and admired the writings and activism of Uri Avnery for decades. I recall, when after he was one of first from Israel to have the guts to meet with Arafat, then head of the PLO, so as to advance the cause of peace between Israel and the Palestinians and the establishment of two states – Israel and Palestine, Avnery was denounced as an Israeli traitor and disinherited by his own mother! Though there were attempts on his life – one nearly finished him off – the undaunted and ever-principled Avnery continued his efforts, though he had a much grander vision, initially, with the establishment of a thorough-going single-state democracy on one piece of land for both Israelis and Palestinians – this was quashed with the ’47 UN Partition plan. Look how well that’s worked! I’ve never swallowed the pap that Israel was seriously interested in a two-state solution (except for the singular effort of the erstwhile prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, which ended with his assassination in 1995 by an Israeli religious fanatic).
