On Friday 5-11-2018 Mary Fallin, the Governor of Oklahoma, had to veto a bill that, were it passed would have set a very dangerous precedent for the rest of the right wing states out there. The bill was going to allow gun ownership with no licensing. This bill “had broad support in the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature” (NY Times).

I think it’s safe to say that throughout the US there is a problem with guns. Do I as a writer oppose the right to bear arms? No I don’t. I do however believe that there needs to be some type of psychological assessment before we hand the instant ability to end another human life over to a person. Mary Fallin stated that she “believes the firearms laws we currently have in place are effective, appropriate and minimal, and serve to reassure our citizens that people who are carrying handguns in this state are qualified to do so” (NY Times).

I don’t believe that the current laws that are in place reassure anyone that the people carrying firearms are qualified. All you have to do is pay money to take a safety course and you can get a license to carry a gun. There’s nothing stopping a personal with severe schizophrenia from buying a gun. They could be on medication to control their symptoms while taking the course and then miss a dose and BAM, a voice in their head told them to splatter brains against walls.

I hear the right wingers now, “what about cars, they could kill people with cars”. Yes you’re right about that but never-minding the fact that cars serve more function in our lives than to end lives (yes animal lives are lives as well if you’re a hunter), you also have to pass a vision, written and practical exam to get a drivers license. Doesn’t seem balanced considering guns are not needed for day to day survival for 99.9% of the population and, studies have shown that states that have stricter gun laws, also have less murder and lower suicide numbers.

This is how it is today in Trump’s backward United States. Republicans want it to be the 1950’s again and the wild west at the same time. Thankfully there are some people in place that are keeping Trumpers and the like in check.

Make sure you get out and vote this November people. The future of our country could depend on it.
