So Long Schultz (Don’t Come Back)

Howard Schultz

News outlets are reporting that Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks and current billionaire, has dropped his bid for the presidency as a third party candidate. This is very good news for the Democratic Party, which had feared that Schultz might split the vote in 2020 and ensure a Trump victory.

Here at LR Net, we try to be generally neutral about presidential candidates (except Trump, of course).  But, frankly, we find Mr. Schultz’s absence a good thing. Not only does it rule out the nightmare scenario of a third party challenge putting the Orange One back in the White House, but, also, it means that the nation doesn’t have to deal with yet another billionaire business professional trying to muscle into its politics. The one thing that Trump is proven beyond the shadow of a doubt is that running the country “like a business” is not an option.

Michael Jay Tucker: Michael Jay Tucker is the “sort of volunteer editor” of LR Net. He is also a writer and journalist who has written on topics ranging from the Jazz Age to computers. (Among his small claims to fame is that he interviewed Steve Jobs just after that talented if complicated man got kicked out of Apple, and just before the company’s Board came begging him to come back.)
