GOP = RIP?

Pollster and political analyst Stanley B. Greenberg has a new book out, RIP GOP, How the New America Is Dooming the Republicans. In it, he argues convincingly that changes in America’s demography (immigration), way of life (urbanization), and changes in gender relations (feminism) are so changing America that the Republican party is pretty much doomed. It’s voters are slowly exiting the stage, never to return.

He expects the GOP to take a serious hit in 2020, and then gradually fade away over the next few decades, particularly as its aging members shuffle off this mortal coil.

It is an extremely attractive prophecy to those of us on the left, and let’s fervently hope that he’s correct. (He has, by the way, a history of predicting the future fairly well.) But let’s not get too confident just yet. We all assumed that Hillary Clinton would win in 2016. There is no sense in getting complacent in 2020.

Still, let’s hope that in the words of the song, “The times, they are a ‘changing.”

(Among his small claims to fame is that he interviewed Steve Jobs just after that talented if complicated man got kicked out of Apple, and just before the company’s Board came begging him to come back.)
